Rams host Cowboys in 102nd Border War battle

November 22, 2011

The Bronze Boot will be on the line at noon Saturday when the CSU Rams host the rival Wyoming Cowboys in the annual Border War football game.

The Bronze Boot has been presented to the winner of the CSU-Wyoming game every year since 1968. The CSU Rams close out the 2011 football season at noon Saturday, hosting rival Wyoming in the 102nd renewal of the Border War at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.

The Rams will try to close the season on a high note after suffering several close losses. Wyoming, which already has qualified for a bowl game, will be looking to finish in third place in the Mountain West after being picked sixth in the official preseason poll.

The Bronze Boot

The winner of the game will be presented with the Bronze Boot, the unique trophy that has been awarded every year since 1968. The boot is an actual combat boot worn in the Vietnam War by Capt. Jeff Romero, Sr., a CSU ROTC graduate.

CSU leads this series, which dates to 1900, 54-42-5. Wyoming, thanks to back-to-back wins, leads in Bronze Boot games 22-21.

Senior salute

The Rams will say to goodbye to 14 seniors, including standout linebacker Mychal Sisson, offensive line stalwarts Paul Madsen and Jake Gdowski, and former Fort Collins High School star Matt Yemm at receiver. They will be honored in pregame ceremonies.

One of the game’s great traditions is the annual Bronze Boot Run, which features the ROTC units from each school running the game ball to the host school’s stadium. The Wyoming ROTC unit will begin the event Friday morning, running 26 miles to the state line, where a brief ceremony will be held. The CSU ROTC unit will then run the remaining 39 miles, presenting the game ball prior to the noon kickoff at Hughes Stadium.

Tickets available

Tickets for the game are available online, at the McGraw Athletic Center ticket office, at the gate or by calling 491-7267.
