The CSU Employee Appreciation Board recently recognized Telecommunications staff with a breakfast for their hard work and dedication to CSU.
The group includes Jim Hebbeln, Debbie Plummer, Kathy Mason, Darlene Houdashelt, Charles McJilton, and Kathy Ahlm.
This group has seen new technology come in over the years as telephone communications have advanced, as evidenced by the boxes of new Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phones stacked in the corner. Such advances prompted discussion among Telecommunications staff on decades of experience and trivia related to telephone communication.
Discussion of the first trans-continental relay phone conversation that traveled through Fort Collins and the telephone poles that helped convey that conversation (and are still standing in downtown Fort Collins) was interspersed with talk of plug-in telephone switchboards, four-digit/letter phone numbers, installation of large corporate telephone systems in metropolitan cities, and multi-party lines.
As the group enjoyed their brief recognition event, calls came in to the switchboard asking how to place an international call, for directory assistance, and how to place a new phone order.
CSU relies on decades of experience and depth of commitment to telephone connectivity that this team provides. One of the most experienced switchboard operators just celebrated her 80th birthday!
Thank you, Telecommunications, for your great work keeping CSU dialed in!
The CSU Employee Appreciation Board, originally formed in 1968, recognizes employees for their hard work and promotes community spirit among CSU faculty and staff through events such as breakfasts or luncheons. Also, the Board each month hosts a prize drawing for all faculty and staff who submit an entry form – including a coveted reserved parking space for a full month.
The board meets monthly during the academic year to discuss and plan employee recognition events, as well as to help promote University events. One of the main objectives of the board is the monthly recognition of a group, entity, or college.
