Interdisciplinary Water Resources Seminar for May 1

Reed Maxwell presents talk about a complete description of the hydrologic cycle on May 5.

 Reed MaxwellReed Maxwell, director of the Integrated GroundWater Modeling Center (IGWMC) and an associate professor of hydrology in the Geology and Geologic Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines, will present the May 5 Interdisciplinary Water Reserouces Seminar. His presentation, "Towards a complete description of the hydrologic cycle: Large scale simulations with parallel, integrated models," will be in Lory Student Center 208, noon-1 p.m.

Integrated hydrologic models are growing in application and show significant promise in unraveling connections between the surface, subsurface, land-surface and lower atmospheric systems. Recent advances in numerical methods, coupled formulation and computing power have all enabled new levels of high resolution integrated simulation not previously feasible.

Large-scale watersheds

Maxwell will demonstrate a number of applications including several large-scale watersheds in North and South America modeled at high resolution. Details will include techniques for model setup and initialization, in addition to results that focus on understanding fluxes, particularly from mountain-block systems, feedbacks and systems dynamics. Additional anthropogenic complications such as the effects of pumping, irrigation and urbanization will be discussed and a path forward for integrated simulations of the hydrologic cycle will be presented.

Before joining the faculty at Mines, Dr. Maxwell was staff in the Hydrologic Sciences group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and he holds a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Water Resources from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley.
