New name for Applied Human Sciences

April 4, 2013

President Tony Frank, student Alex Hendricks, Emeritus Dean Nancy Hartley and Dean Jeff McCubbin launch the rename of the College of Applied Human Sciences to The College of Human and Health Sciences, April 2, 2013.The College of Applied Human Sciences has changed its name to the College of Health and Human Sciences after a launch ceremony on April 2. The new College name is now featured on the college’s websites, social media sites, and in a short video announcing the name. The decision to add the word “health” to the college was based on the term’s holistic meaning — of physical, mental, and social well-being — and the alignment of those factors with the college’s disciplines.

College more interdisciplinary

Promoting health involves helping people not only gain access to high quality medical care, but also cope with life stresses, engage in healthful daily living habits such as exercise and good nutrition, live in healthy environments, pursue productive vocations, and realize their potential. This view of health is extensively interdisciplinary and embodies the mission and vision of the College.

“Human health and improving the quality of life have been a part of our college since its origins over a century ago in home economics,” said Jeff McCubbin, dean of the college. “We wanted a new name that reflects the direction that the college is moving so we can build a stronger future. Our name also acknowledges the college’s past and embraces the university’s land-grant mission.”

Faculty Council voted to recommend the change on December 4, 2012, and the Board of Governors of the Colorado State University system voted to approve the change on February 8, 2013. The name change will be official on July 1, 2013.
