Rams host MWC tennis championships

The Rams opened play in the four-day event Wednesday with a win over New Mexico. Play continues through Saturday at the new University Tennis Complex.

CSU is hosting the MWC tennis championships through Saturday at its new University Tennis Complex.CSU’s new University Tennis Complex will be on display this week as the Rams host the Mountain West Conference Championships.

The four-day event, which began Wednesday, features women’s teams from all nine MWC schools, along with seven men’s teams. Action begins at 10 a.m. daily.

CSU, the No. 9 seed in the women’s bracket, opened play Wednesday with a 4-3 win over No. 8 New Mexico. No. 6 singles player Melissa Holzinger clinched the victory for the Rams with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over New Mexico’s Laura Richardson in the final match.

The Rams take on No. 1 seed UNLV at 2 p.m. today. UNLV is ranked 39th nationally and finished the MWC season 8-0.

CSU and Wyoming do not field men’s teams.

The $2 million University Tennis Complex, located south of the main campus on Research Boulevard, opened this spring. It features 12 courts, eight of which are lighted. The facility also includes a large viewing area for spectators.

Finals in both men’s and women’s brackets will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, with winners advancing to the NCAA Championships. Tickets, available at the gate, are $5.
