George Thornton honored in South Africa

Legacy Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the science, practice, and organization of assessment centres for assessment and development of managers and leaders.

George ThorntonGeorge  Thornton, professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology, was presented the Legacy Award from the South African Assessment Centre Study Group at a recent conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The award recognized Thornton’s lifetime of outstanding contributions to the science, practice, and organization of assessment centres for assessment and development of managers and leaders.  

Over the past 25 years, Thornton has traveled to South Africa five times to make presentations at conferences and universities, give workshops, consult with organizations, serve on graduate thesis committees, collaborate in research, and co-author publications. He has served as an international advisor to the Assessment Centre Research Focus Area at Stellenbosch University.

Thornton has published five books, several chapters, and scores of articles on the assessment center method. He has made presentations on this leadership assessment and development method in 12 countries.

His scientific research and organizational practice with the assessment center method was the basis for Thornton receiving the Outstanding Professional Contributions Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in 2002.
