Alternative Spring Break Civil Rights Road Trip

October 19, 2009

Have you made your plans for Spring Break? If not, consider taking a Civil Right road trip with the Office of Service Learning.

Alternative Spring Break explores Civil Rights

The Alternative Spring Break 2010, organized through the Office of Service Learning in TILT, provides an in-depth, hands-on look at the history of the Civil Rights Movement, from the 1960s to the present.

The purpose is to link this history with social struggles that still exist today so that we can imagine ways to mindfully participate in the ongoing movement for equality and social change.

We will visit multiple historical sites, talk with key leaders in the movement, participate in community service, and reflect upon the impact and power of a collective people. The trip will wrap up in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans with the non-profit group Common Ground Relief.

Trip visits historical sites

Highlights include:

  • Topeka, Kan.
  • Oxford, Miss.
  • Selma, Ala.
  • Memphis, Tenn.
  • Birmingham, Ala.
  • Montgomery, Ala.
  • New Orleans, La.
