Networking: What is it; how do I do it?

September 13, 2012

Have you always wanted to try networking but didn't know how?

Join the Career Center on Tues., Sept. 18 for Networking 101. Led by Wendy Rose, Career Center liaison for the College of Liberal Arts, this hour-long session will teach you the basics, including:

  • how to introduce yourself, questions to ask, and how to close a conversation;
  • how to manage food, drinks, and conversation - and still appear professional; and
  • how to make the most of your connection (the follow up).

Practice your skills

Then, practice your new networking skills at the Denver Ram Network Professional Mixer on Thurs., Sept. 27 in Denver.

Representatives from five industries will be there to speak with you about internship possibilities, job search strategies, and advice from the field.

  • Communication: Sales, web development, marketing, public relations, human relations, editorial, graphic design, and similar fields
  • Business & Other: Management, accounting, finance, economics, design merchandising, and similar fields
  • Government & Non-Profit: Legal, education, public policy, and similar fields
  • Environment & Health Care: Environmental studies, nutrition and fitness, medical, health care management, and similar fields
  • Technology & Engineering: Bioscience, new and green tech, energy, IT, engineering and similar fields

This isn’t a job fair. It’s an opportunity to chat with alumni who have been there, done that, and have something valuable to offer you.

The fine print
  • You will be given business cards and a CSU business card holder at the event.
  • Business attire requested.
  • There is a free bus from Fort Collins to Denver and back available for students – sign up with your registration.
  • The event is free! There are appetizers and beverages!

Register for the event.

Quotes from people who have attended

"With reference to the "Denver Ram Professional Network Mixer" event organized by the CSU Alumni Association, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your team for giving me the chance to meet, talk to the business professionals and for building my network.

It was a great event and was very well organized. I thank you again for all your efforts and time, in helping the students to build their network and I look forward to be a part of many such events in the future."

- Aditya Mittal (’10) (student at the time of attendance)

"Thank you for your efforts in putting on a great event last night. It was my first networking experience and certainly will not be my last. I made some great contacts and hope to go to more CSU alumni events in the future."

- Allison Kern (’10) (student at the time of attendance)

"I’m a ’76 grad in MIS and in the industry for 30 yrs now – I’ve been to a lot of networking events and this represents how to do it right. Lots of ad-hoc but backed with enough structure to get direction for those new to the environment. Any student attending an event such as tonight would actually be a bit spoiled -- as I can assure you many events they attend will not have near the positive energy or professional element as what you have provided them this evening."

- Tom Smith (’76), senior principal, TechEn enterprises llc
