Robert 'Bob' Liebler, longtime mathematics professor, died July 18

Robert Liebler, age 64, died on Saturday, July 18, 2009 in Palm Springs, Calif. Born in Detroit, Mich. on October 23, 1944, to Edgar and Pearl Liebler, he received his B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan.

Professor at CSU since 1972

He began his professional career in the Mathematics Department at Colorado State University in 1972.

Bob is survived by his wife of 18 years, Linda Hamilton of Fort Collins, his daughter Carolyn Liebler of St Pauls, Minn., his son Richard Liebler of Fort Collins, his grandsons Avery and Miles Liebren of St Pauls, Minn., his brother, Jerome Liebler of Science Hill, Ky., his sister, Kathe Scott of Westborough, Mass., his stepdaughter, Georgia Daniels of Enumclaw, Wash., and his stepson, Peter Daniels of Crested Butte, Colo., and his ex-wife, Barbara Liebler of Fort Collins.

Published author, mentor to graduate students

He has been a member of the American Mathematical Society. In 2003 he published an undergraduate textbook on matrix algebra. He published over 30 scientific papers, mostly on representation theory, applied to algebraic combinatorics, coding theory, and geometry.

For many years, Bob organized an extremely successful multi-university bi-weekly seminar, of which he was justly proud, and which is still thriving to the present day.

Bob was advisor to seven Ph.D students over his career.

Gardener, builder, and outdoor enthusiast

In addition to being a professor of mathematics, Bob has been a lifetime gardener with bountiful results, a builder and repairer of anything, and an outdoor enthusiast.

Memorial contributions and service are being planned by the family.

The Department of Mathematics has received word that Professor Bob Liebler died while hiking in California on Saturday. At this time there is very little information other than this tragic news. Our thoughts are with his family.
