School is Cool - 20 years of supporting local students

August 8, 2011

For two decades, the School is Cool program has provided school supplies to less-fortunate children in the Poudre School District to make sure they have the supplies needed to start the school year off right.

Since 1992, School is Cool has provided free school supplies to more than 24,000 local students. As School is Cool enters its 20th year, the program continues to provide valuable materials to school-aged children as the program expands to meet growing needs.

This year, the goal is to help 2,650 students. Last year, 2,516 packs and bags were distributed to 46 Poudre School District elementary, middle school and high schools. Each school determines which students will receive the supplies based on need. Families interested in obtaining School is Cool supplies should contact their home schools directly. Backpacks are not available at or through CSU.

Backpacks are filled with grade-level appropriate supplies such as notebooks, pens, rulers, crayons and erasers. Scientific calculators are included in all middle school backpacks.

Colorado State University employees and community members volunteer their time to organize and stuff backpacks and book bags. The filled backpacks are then delivered to each school requesting supplies.

Organizing activities will take place Aug. 16, assembly-line stuffing will be held Aug. 17 and deliveries occur on Aug. 18. All activities are held at 222 Johnson Hall.

Volunteers are still needed the following days and times:

  • Monday, Aug. 15, 1-4 p.m. – room set-up, moving tables and chairs
  • Tuesday, Aug. 16, 8:15-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3:15 p.m. – unloading and organizing school supplies
  • Thursday, Aug. 18, 9:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12:45-2:30 p.m. – deliveries to schools, volunteers are needed to re-set the room that afternoon

People interested in volunteering may contact Susan Cavender at 491-1432 or Susan.Cavender@colostate.edu.

School supplies are purchased in high volume, which means the average cost to fill one backpack is $20, including the bag. The School is Cool program is generously supported by Fort Collins-based Bohemian Foundation with assistance from the CSU Bookstore and members of the community.
