This exciting and eclectic jazz concert featuring Peter Sommer includes works by French, Russian, and American composers, including a piece by award-winning CSU composition professor Jim David called 'The Locomotive Geryon.' In Greek mythology, Geryon was a warrior giant who was a foe of Hercules.
Peter Sommer is in demand as a performer, clinician and recording artist throughout the state of Colorado and across the nation.
Virtuoso Series Concerts at Colorado State University continue when CSU faculty Peter Sommer, accompanied by Kim Joyce, performs an evening of music for classical alto and soprano saxophone on Monday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the Organ Recital Hall, University Center for the Arts, 1400 Remington St.

The exciting and eclectic program includes 20 C. French composer Henri Tomasi’s Ballade, and 20 C. Russian composer Edison Densiov’s Sonate, and two pieces originally written for oboe – a movement from Edmond Rubbra Sonata for Oboe, and Rodney Rogers’ Lessons of the Sky. A program highlight is a work by CSU’s award-winning composition professor Jim David called The Locomotive Geryon.
Peter Sommer, saxophonist and composer, is in demand as a performer, clinician and recording artist throughout the state of Colorado and across the nation. Since establishing himself among the Denver area’s elite jazz musicians, Peter has contributed his muscular tenor playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to avant garde and beyond.
Mr. Sommer has released two albums as a leader – Sioux County (2006) on Tapestry Records, featuring his original compositions in duo with jazz piano legend Art Lande, and Crossroads (2008) on Capri Records, featuring a two-tenor frontline with the great NYC saxophonist Rich Perry.
Mr. Sommer has performed with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, and has appeared at many jazz festivals throughout the state including the Telluride Jazz Celebration, Jazz in the Sangres and the Vail Jazz Festival. Peter has been a featured jazz soloist at North American Saxophone Alliance Regional and Biennial Conferences and has also performed at IAJE International Conferences in Anaheim and Toronto, Canada, and has performed at World Saxophone Congresses in Valencia, Spain and Bangkok, Thailand.
Mr. Sommer is assistant professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Colorado State University.
Kim Joyce is a piano teacher and an accompanist. She received her B.S. degree in zoology and her B.A. degree in music from Iowa State University, and her M.M. degree in piano performance and accompanying from Northwestern University.
