Ilene Withers from the Registrar's office has received an Everyday Hero Award from the Classified Personnel Council.
Ilene Withers, Customer Service Specialist in the Registrar’s Office, was nominated by Marvin Withers of Housing and Dining Services for an Everyday Hero Award.
Ilene has been working in her present position for 3 ½ years and she has been employed at the University for almost 14 years.
Ilene lived and worked in Sterling at Northeastern Junior College and applied for a transfer to either Colorado State University or University of Northern Colorado when her daughter graduated from high school. She was invited to interview at CSU and on the way back home to Sterling she was offered the position.
Ilene has been a member of the Classified Personnel Council in the past. She is a current member of the Rocky Mountain Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and was a presenter at last year’s conference.
Marvin nominated Ilene for an Everyday Hero Award because of her organization and running of the Adopt-a-Family fundraiser through the Records and Registration office and Student Financial Services.
“Each year this program raises $1,000 to $1,500 to provide Christmas gifts and food for 1-2 needy families," Marvin said. "Money is raised through the office events such as bake sales, silent auctions and donations.”
Since this program started 8 years ago, Ilene “generously gives of her time to produce items for the bake sales and auctions. She also provides creative ideas, encouragement and motivation to her coworkers about these efforts,” Marvin states. “One only has to see the joy and gratitude in the faces of those who are helped by the program to understand it’s true worth, and to realize that Ilene is truly a hero to these families.”
When Ilene is not working she enjoys writing romantic fiction and was published last year. She also has musical interests along with her husband and enjoys attending concerts. Ilene also reads tons!
In December of last year Ilene graduated with a bachelor’s in English Professional Writing from the University of Colorado at Denver. She is also currently judging a book contest for the Colorado Romance Writer’s organization in which she is a member.
When asked what would she like fellow employees to know about her, Ilene responded that she will do anything she can to help our students to graduate while staying within policies.
Ilene plans to stay at Colorado State University until she retires or until she hits it big with her writing career, whichever comes first.
When asked what she thought about being nominated for the Everyday Hero Award Ilene said, “I love it!” She said she gives her all to so many students and it is like being told thank you for your hard work. So many times she doesn’t get to see the end result and this is like having closure for her efforts.
