Green Warriors shrink footprints for prizes

February 27, 2011

Last year, nearly 200 CSU students have logged on to the Green Warrior site to earn points and prizes for pledging to take "green" actions. This year students are pledging to do even more, and earning more points, when compared to last year's campaign. There are already 25 students that have reached the coveted "Green Warrior Certification" level, which surpasses last year's total.

Green Warrior Certified

Along with checking off a list of green actions, students can also earn points by designing and executing their own plan for conserving resources. “So far, I have received plans from more than 50 students who are committed to resource conservation on numerous levels,” says Amber Smith, Sustainability Coordinator for Housing & Dining Services.

Students are earning Green Warrior gear, such as a sticker, a t-shirt, a remote-controlled power strip, a chance to win a cruiser or mountain bike, and the stylish Green Warrior Certification decal. The campaign runs until Apr. 2, so it’s not too late to get involved!

“I am also offering an additional 10 points to Green Warriors who volunteer for a one hour shift at the upcoming RecycleMania waste sort,” says Smith. “On Wednesday, March 2nd, there will be a large waste sort, on the east side of the Lory Student Center Plaza, to help educate the campus on what should be reused, recycled, composted, and thrown away.

CSU is at the forefront in demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability. “The University is striving to reduce waste, energy consumption, and to provide students with the knowledge and tools to incorporate green living practices,” says Smith.
