Professor Carmen S. Menoni of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Colorado State University recently received the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 2012 SPIE Laser Damage Symposium.
The presentation - “What role do defects play in the laser damage behavior of metal oxides?” - describes how to control native defects in amorphous oxides grown by ion beam sputtering to realize thin films that have superior resistance to laser damage.
Menoni’s co-authors are Peter Langston, Erik Krous, Dinesh Patel, Brendan Reagan, Keith Wernsing, Jorge Rocca of CSU;, Luke Emmert , Wolfgang Rudolph of the University of New Mexico; and Ashot Markosyan, Roger Route and Martin Fejer of Stanford University.
The SPIE Laser Damage Symposium is the forum where the latest advances in optical materials for high power lasers are presented.
Menoni directs the Advanced Thin Film laboratory at CSU, a research facility dedicated to the engineering and testing of specialized optical coatings for high power lasers. Her work is supported by the Office of Naval Research and the DoD High Energy Lasers Joint Technology Office.
Menoni is internationally recognized for her research in optics and laser science. Earlier this year, the university honored her with the Scholarship Impact Award, one of the university’s most prestigious honors.
Since joining Colorado State, Menoni has established a vibrant research program in two important areas of optical and laser science. She is a leader in the use of bright beams of extreme ultraviolet laser light that are used to demonstrate novel nanoscale table-top microscopies. She has also established world-leading research in optical materials. Her contributions either as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator have resulted in more than $45 million in federal funding to Colorado State.
