Barnes to attend U.S. national team try out

February 16, 2009

After a career at Colorado State that saw her become one of the most dominant forces in the country, Mekana Barnes may now get a chance to showcase her skills at the international level.

From Feb. 20-22, Barnes will be one the 160 players who will try out for the women’s volleyball national team in Colorado Springs, Colo., fighting for a chance to play for the reigning silver medalists from the Beijing Olympics.

There are 40 other middle blockers expected to join the Rams’ All-American on the roster, and she is excited at the chance to see how she compares to the nation’s top talent.

“I’m excited. Actually, more nervous,” said Barnes. “There are going to be a lot of very good players and I am just going in to see where I am. I think something I want to do is play overseas, and this will allow me to test my ability and see where I stand.”

Barnes, who has only been playing the game of volleyball for seven years, is excited to use the three days in Colorado Springs to be around many of the top coaches in volleyball, including Hugh McCutcheon, who took over the women’s national team fresh off leading the U.S. men’s volleyball team to a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

“I am really excited to get a chance to work with these coaches,” said Barnes, “and I remember last year (at the try outs) that it was exciting just to be in the same gym with so much experience.”
