Ask Cam

Buzzing with research

October 25, 2013

Dear Cam,

On a recent walk south on the Spring Creek Trail south of the Hilton, I spotted three beehives tucked away in an overgrown field on what I believe is CSU property. As a beekeeper myself, I am curious if these are CSU hives, and if so, who is maintaining them? Thanks for shedding light!

Cam's answer

Your question got me buzzing with excitement! I love a good overgrown field myself, and I've watched those bees for quite some time. As it turns out, those particular bees are being studied by Dhruba Naug, associated professor of biology, as a model for understanding individual and social behavior, and their interaction with disease dynamics. Those busy bees are the perfect subjects!

Thanks for asking!
