April 2, 2012

Runners will take their marks for the Fast and the Furriest 5K, with race time at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, on the CSU Oval.

person walking dogProceeds from the race will benefit CSU’s Companion Animal Care Fund, which helps Veterinary Teaching Hospital clients save the lives of their pets during an emergency or urgent life-threatening condition that they could not otherwise immediately afford.

In addition to benefiting a good cause, the event includes activities for children and pets, and racers are invited to bring any pet that is less than 500 pounds to participate in the 5K. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners and the top male and female runners with a pet. In addition to prizes being awarded to runners, the fastest, furriest and most unique pets also receive prizes. All participants receive an original T-shirt.

Other race-day features include a dog and runner expo, free post-race massages, tons of race day give-aways, face painting and a 1K fun run for kids. The kids’ fun run will begin at 10 a.m. on the Oval. The 5K race is held on a fast, USA Track and Field certified course and includes chip timing.

Race helps pets in need

The Companion Animal Care Fund is entirely need-based and is reserved solely for members of the local community. The fund may benefit any animal fitting specific criteria for need including companion pets, exotic species, small ruminants and large animals. Without the assistance provided by the fund, many clients would be faced with the difficult choice of declining care for their animal or relinquishing ownership.

Entry fee for the race is $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the race. Children 12 years old or younger may participate in the 1K fun run or the 5K for free, or have the option of registering for the 5K for $7 in order to receive the T-shirt.

Registration available online

Register online or at Runner’s Roost or Foot of the Rockies. Packet pick up and race day registration is from 7:30 a.m.-8:45 a.m. on site only at the CSU Oval near Isotope Drive.
