Tom Lovejoy, founder of the television series "Nature," will help the School of Global Environmental Sustainability present the documentary, "Journey of the Universe: the Epic Story of Cosmic, Earth and Human Transformation," at 5 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Lory Student Center Theatre.

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required, but space is limited.

Documentary won an Emmy

The Emmy Award-winning documentary investigates and connects many of science’s big picture issues with the human impact on the changing environmental dynamic.

Lovejoy, the biodiversity chair of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, will serve as the host for the evening. He is the recipient of such honors as the 2001 Tyler Prize for Environment Achievement and, more recently, the 2012 Blue Planet Prize. He has held prestigious, international positions such as the World Bank Chief Biodiversity Advisor, lead specialist for the Environment for Latin America, executive vice president of the World Wildlife Fund, and science advisor to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

The documentary screening will also feature a panel of distinguished CSU faculty members:

  • Holmes Rolston III, University Distinguished Professor of philosophy and 2003 recipient of the Templeton Prize
  • Robin Reid, director for the Center of Collaborative Conservation and 2012 recipient of ESA Sustainability Science Award
  • Cameron Ghalambor, associate professor of biology and 2009 recipient of the NSF Career Award

Lovejoy will also join SoGES in presenting “Can we Manage the Planet?” at 9 a.m. Oct. 19 in the Lory Student Center Grey Rock Room. This event will promote the SoGES Biodiversity Initiative.

The School of Global Environmental Sustainability is an umbrella organization that champions interdisciplinary environmental education across all eight colleges at CSU. It prepares students to address the multiple economic, environmental and societal challenges of global sustainability through broad-based research, curricular and outreach initiatives.
