University Celebrates East China Normal University Partnership with East-West Concerts, April 27-May 1

East-West Week, April 27 - May 1, celebrates a recent partnership between Colorado State and East China Normal University. The music departments from both universities will join in four concerts which include two performances of Beethoven's Ode to Joy. 'I can't think of a more fitting work to perform with our friends from China," says Todd Queen, chair of the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Celebrating an enriching partnership

Next week, 25 students and faculty from East China Normal University will be at Colorado State University for East-West Week, a celebration of the partnership between the two universities. Four nights of concerts will be held at CSU’s University Center for the Arts, starting April 27 and running through May 1.

New, musical focus

Located in Shanghai, East China Normal University (ECNU) has partnered with CSU on a number of research initiatives and student exchange programs. The universities have brought a musical focus to their partnership.

During their week at CSU, the Chinese students will attend faculty concerts and masterclasses, collaborate with CSU students on a recital, and join the CSU Choirs and University Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s monumental “Symphony No. 9.” 

East-West Week features three music events:

  • A Virtuoso Series concert
  • A collaboration concert
  • A choir and orchestra combined concert

Virtuoso Series Concert featuring Todd Queen, tenor

Todd Queen, chair of the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, recently visited China, where he sang at the ECNU anniversary concert with Professor Jin Cao and the ECNU University Orchestra.

Queen continues this connection with a concert of unique art songs with guitar accompaniment, including Benjamin Britten’s Songs of the Chinese, and Dominick Argento’s Letters from Composers.

The Virtuoso Series Concert is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27 in the Organ Recital Hall at the University Center for the Arts, 1400 Remington St. in Fort Collins.

East-West Week collaboration concert

CSU and ECNU students will collaborate on a recital featuring Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes” and various opera scenes.

The Collaboration Concert is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29 in the Organ Recital Hall at the University Center for the Arts.

East-West Week Choir and Orchestra Combined Concert

The CSU Symphony, CSU Choirs and ECNU guests come together on a grand scale to perform two contrasting works: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125Choral’' and Igor Stravinksy’s Symphony of Psalms.

The Choir/Orchestra Combined Concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 in the Griffin Concert Hall at the University Center for the Arts.

Tickets

Tickets for individual events are:

  • $12 for the public
  • $7 for Colorado State students
  • $1 for youth ages 2-17

A ticket package is available to enjoy all three events for the price of two. Tickets are available at the new University Center for the Arts Ticket Office in the UCA Griffin Lobby, by phone at (970) 491-ARTS (2787) or online.

Advance purchase is recommended as tickets purchased at the door include additional fees.
