Lake Street Garage Recognized as One of Nation's Best

June 10, 2011

The Lake Street Parking Garage was recently recognized with an Award of Excellence for a parking structure design.

Lake Street Parking Garage The award recognized the collaboration of the university's Parking Services; Carl Walker, Inc., parking consultant and engineer; and architect H+L Architecture.

The award was given by the International Parking Institute  as part of its recognition of 12 of the industry's outstanding parking facilities and operations with its 2011 Awards of Excellence. Awards were given based on innovation, efficiency, eco- and user-friendliness, cost-savings and collaboration among its winners.

Increases in enrollment and construction impacts on surface parking at CSU lead to the creation of the 868-space Lake Street parking structure. The garage has freed up the campus core for pedestrians and public transit. International Parking Institute notes that the garage is open, well-lit and secure while housing more than 20,000 square-feet of retail and office space.  Its sustainable features include reserved parking for low-emitting vehicles, onsite power via a 9,000 photovoltaic array, and onsite water management and treatment. The project is seeking LEED Platinum certification and has been added to the Green University Walking Tour, which highlights environmentally friendly elements on campus.

The Lake Street Parking Garage also received an honorable mention in the Architectural Achievement category.
