MAX bus, technology testing begins across city

February 13, 2014

The city's new rapid bus system, called MAX, is beginning to test bus operations and technology, including occasionally routing the bus on its dedicated guideway through campus.

A rendering of the MAX station on campus at University Avenue.Construction on infrastructure, which spanned two years and impacted traffic flow and parking on the east side of campus, for the Front Range’s first bus rapid transit system on the Mason Corridor is concluding. MAX will provide a rapid bus system from south Fort Collins to downtown, stopping at stations at Prospect Road, University Avenue and Laurel Street, as it passes through campus.

Beginning this month, until the start of operation in May, city Transfort staff is putting the new buses and guideway to the test. During testing and training, you’ll see the occasional MAX bus driving the route, which also will trigger brief red lights at East/West intersections across campus. Over the next several months, bus operators will practice with MAX on the Mason Corridor – from the Downtown Transit Center through campus south past Harmony Road. They will be making stops, entering and exiting traffic, and testing their systems. However, they will not be picking up passengers. Stay off the guideway, which is along Mason Street, whether on foot or bike. The guideway is only open to Transfort personnel and buses.

MAX service does not begin until May.

Other less noticeable testing also is underway. The new system's complex technology, such as security gates at the guideway’s intersections, station communication systems, and ticket vending machines, are being tested. Until May, the ticket vending machines are not accepting money or selling tickets, and the emergency call boxes are not operating.
