Soccer team faces UNC today in home opener

August 27, 2014

The fledgling CSU women's soccer program opens the 2014 home season at 4:30 today against rival Northern Colorado.

Junior Megan Speed is a co-captain and leader on defense. With a new home base and high hopes for the season, the Rams and coach Bill Hempen are looking for big things in their second year of competition. The Rams return several key players and have added 18 talented newcomers as they look build for the future.

New home

The game will be played on the Rams’ new on-campus home field, adjacent to the CSU lagoon. The Rams, who played miles from campus last year at the Fort Collins Soccer Complex, actually played one match on the lagoon field last year due to snowy conditions, but this will be their first scheduled match at their new home.

The Rams opened the season last week with a 2-0 loss to Colorado in Boulder. The Rams played the talented Buffs, who made the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last year, very close before a couple of late goals gave CU the win.

Colorado Cup

Today’s battle, like the CU match, is part of the Colorado Cup competition. The Colorado Cup goes to the best team among the state’s six Division I teams.

The Rams will be looking for their first win over UNC after playing the Bears to a 2-2 draw last year. UNC is 1-1 this season after beating Colorado College 3-2 and losing to CU 1-0.

'Gold out'

Fans are encouraged to wear gold for the team’s annual “Gold out” game.  The Rams will debut new all-gold uniforms at the game.

Today’s match begins a stretch of five consecutive home matches for the Rams, who host Portland State (Sept. 5), Iowa (Sept. 7), Southern Methodist (Sept. 12) and College of Charleston (Sept. 14) in the coming weeks.

Free admission

Admission is free to all CSU home games. There is some seating at the field, or fans can bring their own lawn chairs.
