Greek Night Out Awards

May 6, 2009

The Greek Night Out Awards on April 19 marked the end of the annual CSU Greek Week - a week long competition of events meant to inspire and challenge the Greek Community. Events include: a Lip Sync competition, the Stroll, Philanthropy day which raises money for a local organization, and Penny Wars.

The Greeks come out

During every school year, Greek Chapters compile a "Greek Night Out Binder" that document and display the chapter's leadership, programming, community service, chapter management, and other aspects (see chart below). The binders will be reviewed by the Office of Greek Life and outside judges. The results were announced during the awards ceremony on April 19.

"The awards ceremonies honor and congratulate the 36 Greek chapters, the four councils, and their leadership and accomplishments that happened the previous year," says Clark Erwin-Billones, administrative assistant and webmaster for Greek Life.

Presidential Greek Vision Award

The Presidential Greek Vision Award turned three this year. The President's Office sponsors a $2,500 grant for one fraternity and sorority that submits a proposal for a program or event that will benefit an individual Greek Chapter and/or CSU and the local community.

Interim President, Tony Frank, presented the award to this year's recipients: Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

Alpha Tau Omega's proposal
Jon Morris, President: "We're looking to put on an all Greek Unity Carnival. The event will have food, games, and all be topped off with a guest speaker Kevin Synder. His program "Be Greek, Be Proud!" focuses on unity amongst Greeks, as well as Greek pride. The point of the whole event is that we are stronger together and by uniting we can be bigger, do more, and make a larger impact on this campus. We want to build interfraternal relations so that we have mutual support for one another to push our community in a positive direction."

Delta Delta Delta's proposal
Melissa Still, former President: "Our Chapter wants to bring the Reflections program to campus in three parts. The first part would be to host a Fat Talk Free event. We would like to team up with the Wellness Center at Hartshorn Health Center and their annual "Love Your Body Week" to increase awareness on the campus. The second part is to provide the Reflections program for any student that is interested. To do this we would need to send two women to the Body Image Academy, as well as an academic advisor. The final part is to educate the members of our fraternities about body image, both in men and women, and discuss what they can do to be involved."
