School is Cool kicks off annual effort

July 1, 2010

Having the tools to do the job right is essential. Unfortunately for some Fort Collins-area families, financial realities mean they are unable to provide their elementary, middle school and high school-aged children with a new backpack and the supplies necessary to start the academic year off right.

The 19th annual School is Cool program, a community outreach effort managed and organized by Colorado State University employees, helps thousands of these children each year. The School is Cool campaign kickoff is today – Thursday, July 1.

Dept. representative meeting July 7

A department representative meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7 in Room 104, TILT Building. Learn more about School is Cool and how you and co-workers can aid in this effort. You will also receive materials, posters, stickers and more. RSVP to (970) 491-6675 or e-mail Susan.Cavender@colostate.edu by July 5.

All gifts to the School is Cool program make a difference. A $20 donation, for instance, provides one backpack full of grade-specific supplies – an average of 13 items ranging from crayons and glue sticks, to three-ring binders and scissors.

Stuff backpacks Aug. 11

Filled backpacks will be delivered to Poudre School District schools on Thursday, Aug. 12. Volunteers are needed to stuff backpacks and organize materials on Wednesday, Aug.11 in a new location. School is Cool will be housed in Room 222, Johnson Hall.

To volunteer, contact Susan Cavender at (970) 491-6675 or Susan.Cavender@colostate.edu.

School is Cool is being asked to help nearly 2,500 students for the 2010-2011 school year. Last year, more than 2,400 packs and bags were distributed to Poudre School District students.

For a third consecutive year, scientific calculators will be included in all middle school backpacks thanks to a grant from the Fort Collins-based Bohemian Foundation. Additional in-kind donations are provided by the Colorado State University Bookstore.

Make your donation by Aug. 2

The deadline for monetary donations to this year’s campaign is Monday, Aug. 2, although donations will be accepted year-round.
