"Kathy" Kathleen Ann Young

March 8, 2013

"Kathy" Kathleen Ann Young, 64, of Loveland, died March 6 in Fort Collins.

Kathy YoungShe was born Nov. 13, 1948, in Savanna, IL, to Gerald and Lucille Kensinger.

Kathy and her family lived in Mt. Carroll, IL, before moving to Loveland in 1954. In 1966, she graduated from Loveland High School. In 1968, she married Jim Young and they were married for 45 years.

Kathy began her working career at 20 as a secretary with Southwestern Supply Company in Fort Collins.  She worked there until 1972, when she decided to start a family.  For 10 years she was able to stay home to raise her three children.  In 1982 she returned to working part-time at her children’s elementary school in Loveland.

In the spring of 1984 she started her CSU career. Kathy worked as an assistant director of Operations Management for Housing  at CSU for 25 years. She received a letter of appreciation in 1991 acknowledging her leadership in a large project because of her “positive, helpful attitude” and her “congenial, cooperative, knowledgeable,” leadership. In 25 years, Kathy made a difference.  She was instrumental in the implementation of so many programs that still exist today including birthday recognitions and training programs for all levels of staff.  After her retirement, many people commented how much they miss her spunky personality, sense of humor, leadership and her orneriness.

Kathy Young“Certainly, she has positively affected the lives of individuals as well as the process, purpose and mission of Operations Management and Housing & Dining Services,” said Allison DeWaele, a Housing & Dining employee.

Kathy was an original lifeguard of Loveland, where she became a teacher of swimming to the young and old, including her own children. Her children’s love for the pool brought her to Loveland Swim Club, where she was active for many years. Along with her love of swimming, Kathy enjoyed rollerblading, reading, sewing, crafts, jewelry making, shopping and traveling.

Kathy is survived by her husband, James; son Geoff (Tami) of Jamestown, NC, daughters Julie Hornung (Ryan) and Jennifer Young, both of Loveland; brother Geoff Kensinger of Brighton; and her grandchildren Braden, Katie, Trenton and Hailey.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Viegut Funeral Home in Loveland. A reception will follow at the Viegut Reception Center. Memorials can be made to the Kathleen Young Memorial Fund, care of Viegut Funeral Home.
