Rams topple Buffaloes in Boulder, 23-17

September 6, 2009

Senior Grant Stucker celebrated his first collegiate start by throwing for a touchdown and leading Colorado State on five scoring drives in the Rams' 23-17 upset of rival Colorado on Sunday night.

CSU held the Buffs to just 29 yards rushing, an area in which many analysts thought CU would have an advantage entering the game. The last time the Rams held an opponent to 29 yards or less was Oct. 28, 2000, at San Diego State.

It was the second win for the Mountain West Conference over a Big 12 team in 24 hours, coming on the heels of BYU's shocking 14-13 victory over third-ranked Oklahoma. [More]

Opening touchdown drive

The Rams began the scoring in stunning fashion with a six-play, 80-yard opening touchdown drive highlighted by a 57-yard pass play in its opening possession.

Stucker threw a 13-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to new running back John Mosure, who also had a 1-yard TD run as the Rams (1-0) never trailed in quieting the crowd at Folsom Field.

“Winning in Boulder, it was surreal. This is overwhelming,” said Stucker.

While Stucker, a senior from Parker, Colo., was selected the Rams' quarterback last week over Jon Eastman, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins kept his starter a secret until just before kickoff when his son, junior Cody Hawkins, got the nod over Tyler Hansen.

23 years since last win in Boulder

The last time CSU won in Boulder was Sept. 6, 1986 - 23 years to the day - when the Rams earned a 23-7 win.
