School is Cool volunteers still needed

July 30, 2012

For more than 20 years, School is Cool has relied on volunteers to provide backpacks and school supplies to students in the Poudre School District, and there is still a need for volunteers for this year's effort.

Volunteering your time next week will help more than 2,500 less fortunate children in our community. School is Cool is considered a University initiative where VIP leave may be used with prior approval from your supervisor.

Please sign up for a time slot that will work for your schedule and your level of activity. To sign up, visit this website or email schooliscoolvolunteers@colostate.edu.

Many shifts require lifting, but various assistance levels are available. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle.

Fun and essential

Volunteering is a fun and essential way to support this worthy cause while working alongside your colleagues from across campus. School is Cool is organized and managed by a group of university volunteers. This year, we’re coordinating our volunteer sign ups through Sign Up Genius. That link takes you to a page where you can scroll through a daily schedule of tasks with the number of volunteers needed noted in parentheses. For more information or details, contact Heather Packard, 491-8356 or Farrah Bustamante, 491-1992, volunteer coordinators.

According to recent statistics, more than 8,400 Poudre School District students who qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch program will likely struggle to purchase school supplies this year. The Free and Reduced Lunch program is a commonly used metric to quantify the number of low income students in the district, and the number of qualified students has increased by 14 percent over the last year. Currently, only about half of the students who qualify are served by existing school supply programs and the need is continuing to increase. The goal of this year’s School is Cool effort is to distribute about 2,500 filled backpacks to area schools.

Donations welcome

The cost to sponsor a backpack is $25. Backpacks are filled with age-appropriate items ranging from crayons to three-ring binders to paper products to scissors. School is Cool is very fortunate to partner with the Colorado State University Bookstore as their contacts allow School is Cool to receive many donated items and they are able to buy in bulk at discounted prices. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated. Go to School is Cool to donate.

Please lend a helping hand from Tuesday, Aug. 7 - Thursday, Aug. 9 to organize supplies, stuff backpacks, make deliveries to local schools, or general logistical assistance.  Sign up today and make a difference in the life of a child.
