DeLoach's Olympic effort begins Tuesday

Former Ram opens her bid for a medal in the women's long jump with the preliminary round Tuesday; finals set for Wednesday.

DeLoach, the former CSU All-American, will compete in the women’s long jump preliminaries at noon MDT Tuesday. DeLoach and the rest of the field will have three jumps to qualify for the 12-woman finals.

Finals Wednesday

The finals, which begin at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday, begin with a round of three jumps to determine the top eight qualifiers. After that, the top eight will get three more jumps, with the best earning the gold medal.

DeLoach, who graduated in 2008, is competing in her first Olympics. She and Becky Hammon, who is playing for the Russian women’s basketball team, are the only former Rams competing in the 2012 Olympics.

DeLoach, who qualified third at the U.S. Olympic Trials, is considered a strong contender for an Olympic medal. She currently ranks in the top six in the world, and finished second at the World Indoor Championships in March to earn a silver medal.
