February 11, 2013

CSU's Student Legal Services office was recently recognized as the Most Outstanding Student Legal Services Office in 2012 by the University Student Legal Services Association-Western Region.

Kathleen Harward, director; Forrest Orswell, staff attorney; Rob Lowrey, staff attorney and Valerie McIntyre, office manager, were all recognized for their dedication and work within the Student Legal Services office."Receiving this award from such a high-quality group is an honor and means that we at CSU Student Legal Services are making students’ lives a little easier every day and helping them succeed at school and life," said Kathleen Harward, director of CSU Student Legal Services.

Instrumental on campus

CSU's Student Legal Services staff help students resolve legal problems that may be detracting from school, as well as assist students in forming their own businesses. SLS advises on a range of topics, including constitutional rights and criminal law, landlord-tenant, accident and injury cases, identity theft, and consumer and domestic issues. They also help students prepare for student conduct hearings and appeals. In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the office spent more than 1,300 hours serving 1,173 clients and reached many more students through presentations and publications.

CSU's Student Legal Services collaborates with many on-campus departments, such as the Office of Conflict Resolution, CSU Police Department, the Associated Students of Colorado State University, Housing & Dining Services, the Office of Orientation and Transition Programs, the Office of International Programs, the Women and Gender Advocacy Center and other student organizations, fraternities and sororities.

Engaged in the community

Student Legal Services also partners with the City of Fort Collins Neighborhood Services as part of its landlord training program and the City of Fort Collins Occupancy Enforcement agency to help clarify and educate students about the agency’s procedures.
