Standard and contemporary jazz

The program features standard and contemporary jazz, including vocals, R&B, and funk, as well as original compositions by students. Jazz Combo I is directed by Shilo Stroman, and Jazz Combos II and III are under the direction of Jon Gray.

Jon Gray, a second year graduate student and the director of Combos II and III, is particularly proud of this program.

Delving into the song book

"In a lot of other university-level programs you’ll see similar types of concerts, where you hear a lot of the same music,” Gray said. “Shilo [Stroman] and I try to push our combos to write their own music, to delve a little bit deeper into the song book.”

The Jazz Combos Concert is an anticipated event on the music calendar at CSU.

“Keep your ears open for some more modern stuff,” Jon says, smiling. “You might hear a radio hit that’s been given the jazz treatment.”
