Start some positive habits with RecycleMania

February 6, 2012

If you're looking to create some positive habits in 2012, start with something easy! Recycling is a great way to become more involved in CSU and the Fort Collins community's green initiatives, but be warned! Your newfound awareness of Mother Earth's needs might lead you into other areas of sustainability.

RecycleMania is a national recycling competition that tracks recycling rates per capita as well as overall waste reduction efforts. In 2011, CSU placed 21st among more than 600 colleges and universities participating in RecycleMania. The Live Green Team also sponsors an on-campus competition during RecycleMania among CSU’s residence halls and university apartment communities. The winning hall and apartment win the coveted RecycleMania trophy as well as funds to further green efforts in their community. Both competitions start on Feb. 5 and end on March 31. The winners will be recognized at the Student Sustainability Fair and Earth Day Celebration on April 18 on the plaza!

Sorting through trash

In addition, a trash audit is conducted on campus each spring during RecycleMania. The 2011 trash audit revealed that 28 percent of what was thrown away on campus could have been recycled, down from 40 percent in 2009. More than 40 volunteers from the Live Green Team, CSU Recycling Crew, and students helped sort trash on campus to raise awareness about what can be recycled. This year’s audit takes place on Feb. 29 on University Avenue near the Computer Science building just east of the plaza.

If you are a student living in a residence hall, contact your hall's Eco Leader to become more involved in these sustainable efforts. Each residence hall has one student representative who serves as a peer educator and works in partnership with other hall representatives and staff to engage students and promote sustainability efforts within their hall.

Great time for spring cleaning

Faculty and staff members on campus are encouraged to undertake some spring cleaning during RecycleMania and recycle old documents, papers, etc. Bins can be reserved through the Integrated Solid Waste unit anytime in the month of March.

Recycling is truly the first step in taking green initiatives, and RecycleMania can get you started on taking those green actions. We're going to need as much help as possible from students and the campus community during RecycleMania, so start a habit that we can all benefit from.
