November 14, 2012

Tom Hilbert now has 400 wins at CSU.CSU volleyball coach Tom Hilbert continues to pile up victories – and milestones.

Hilbert, who has won more games than any coach in the school’s history, earned his 400th career victory Tuesday night when the Rams rallied for a 21-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-21 victory over host Northern Colorado. Hilbert, who has won nearly 80 percent of his games since arriving at CSU 16 years ago, now has a 400-103 record with the Rams.

"I'm happy to win 400 games. It’s about being at the same place for a long time," Hilbert said of the milestone. "I'm happy to be at CSU. I'll be here as long as they'll have me."

Fans greet coach, team

Hilbert, who was voted into the CSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rams were greeted by an enthusiastic group of supporters Tuesday night at Moby Arena after returning from Greeley.

Hilbert’s remarkable tenure at CSU has included nine Mountain West championships and at least 20 wins every season. The Rams have reached the NCAA Tournament every year under Hilbert’s direction, reaching the Sweet 16 five times.

Making a title run

While Hilbert was thrilled to get his 400th win at CSU – his overall record of 587-175 (.770) ranks him 10th among active Division I coaches in winning percentage – his primary focus is on winning the Mountain West title and continuing the streak of NCAA appearances.

The Rams have three remaining matches, starting tonight at Air Force. If they win all three – they close the regular season Nov. 23 at home against New Mexico – they will edge San Diego State for the league championship and earn the Mountain West’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
