Cans Around the Oval a big success

October 20, 2011

Cans Around the Oval is a school tradition, where students, faculty, and staff partner with community members, local media, and area businesses to raise awareness about the facts surrounding the issue of hunger, as well as raise food and monetary donations. This event is Larimer County's largest single-day food drive.

Drive brings in $30,000 and 60,000 lbs. of food

Once again, CSU and the greater Fort Collins community united to make a measurable impact on the issue of hunger with the Cans Around the Oval food drive on Wed., Oct. 12, to benefit the Food Bank for Larimer County (FBLC).

The Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement (SLiCE) office put on the event in conjunction with the FBLC.

Results are still be tallied, but so far an impressive $30,000 was raised in addition to the over 60,000 pounds of actual food donated this year. With the monetary donations added the the 60,000 pound of food, the estimated total impact of all donations comes to 177,781 pounds of food. Thousands of Larimer County residents will be directly impacted by these donations.

The SLiCE office worked with 135 registered campus and community organizations and countless individuals to collect canned food and monetary donations. The top contributing organization for this year’s drive was the CSU College of Business, bringing in more than 10,000 pounds of food and over $14,000.

25th annual event

Beginning in the early hours and continuing throughout the day, campus and community organizations stopped by the CSU Oval to drop off monetary and food donations. CSU President Tony Frank started off the day with a donation of 1,000 pounds of rice.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to weigh donations and load them in to moving trucks and trailers to transport the generous volume of donations to the food bank.

The SLiCE office worked with 141 registered campus and community organizations and countless individuals to collect canned food and monetary donations. The top contributing organization for this year’s drive was the CSU College of Business, bringing in over 15,000 pounds of food and nearly $17,000.

Denver Alumni Effort

With the demand at food banks rising this year, Colorado State University's Cans Around Denver, in conjunction with Cans Around the Oval, is a community service project in support of Food Bank of the Rockies. The Denver Alumni effort will continue through the month of October.

CSU is encouraging alumni in Denver to show their support for those in need. During the month of October, companies can host a Cans Around Denver food drive at their business. Property managers can supply their own bins or can request CSU Cans Around Denver boxes to have in their lobbies.

CSU is accepting food or non-perishable donations during the month of October at the CSU Denver Center, 475 17th Street (corner or 17th and Glenarm), Suite 100, Denver.

The event will wrap up with a final collection during CSU Hometown Huddle Football Watch Parties on October 29 at 4 p.m. The Huddles and food collection will be located at CB Potts, 6575 S. Greenwood Plaza Blvd., Greenwood Village and Whiskey Bar, 2203 Larimer St., Denver.

Food Bank of the Rockies
