Berry earns conference Player of the Week

February 20, 2009

Colorado State defender Kallie Berry has earned her conference's Player of the Week award, the Western Water Polo Association announced Wednesday.

Berry, a true freshman from Long Beach, Calif., led the Rams to a 3-1 record at last weekend’s Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational. Combined in four games, Berry scored 10 goals with three assists, three steals and three ejections drawn in leading the Rams to an 11-3 win over Fresno Pacific, an 11-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay and a 12-11 win over Cal State East Bay.

“I think it’s fantastic,” said coach Mike Moody. “She’s just now coming into her own. She only has nine games under her belt at this level, and she’s only going to get stronger. She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in her conference.”

Undefeated in conference play

With her efforts last weekend, Berry helped CSU improve to 4-0 in the WWPA, the league’s best conference record this season.

“We’re expecting great things from her,” Moody said. “We’re really excited for her in our program. She earned this.”

Berry is tied with Ali Pavlik for second on the team this season with 19 goals, trailing Sarah Ostling (23).

A four-year letterwinner in both water polo and swimming at Millikan High School in Long Beach, Calif., Berry was first-team all-conference on three occasions, including 2006, when she earned league MVP honors after leading her team to a conference title. She is an apparel design and appreciation major at Colorado State.

The Rams (6-7 overall) return to California this weekend for the Sonoma State Seawolf Splash. CSU has won six of its last nine games, with its only three losses in that stretch coming to opponents ranked in the nation’s top seven (twice to No. 5 Cal, and once to No. 7 UC Davis).
