Kimberly Sorensen, manager of social media, represented CSU's social media team at the PR News Social Media Icon Awards in New York City. CSU’s Social Media Committee received an honorable mention as the Best Social Media Team in the nation. Colorado State was among the finalists for PR News’ top Social Media Icon honor that included teams from Cisco Systems, Raytheon, Devils Arena Entertainment and the United Nations Foundation. CSU and Brown University were the only higher education institutions recognized.

PR News

PR News is a national organization for public relations and communications professionals. The Social Media Icon Awards, held in April, honored the most outstanding social media campaigns that took chances, made incredible strides and understand the power of social media in public relations. Social Media Icon Award honorees set new standards of digital excellence and point the way for other organizations to follow.

“We are proud of our social media team and what it has already accomplished, and look forward to what’s next in this emerging field,” said Tom Milligan, vice president for External Relations at CSU.

Social Media Committee

The university’s social media strategy is guided by the Social Media Committee, chaired in the Division of External Relations with core members representing offices from across campus: Alumni Association, Athletics, Events and Constituent Engagement, Students Affairs and the President’s Office. The committee is responsible for directing how the university’s brand and reputation is communicated and illustrated in social media platforms. It is also responsible for educating and training university staff to effectively use social media as part of their communication toolkits. CSU’s Social Media Policy, developed by the committee in 2010, is a model for many institutions across the nation.

The committee designed and implemented several social media campaigns during 2012 including a 10-day countdown to Homecoming & Family Weekend with memes, MyCAMeo photo promotion, helped land CAM the Ram in the Final Four of the Capital One Mascot Challenge, and a photo depiction of the Five Days of Finals.
