Rams ready for Showdown with Buffs

September 1, 2010
By Tony Phifer

The Colorado State University Rams and University of Colorado Buffaloes renew their 117-year-old rivalry at noon Saturday at Denver' Invesco Field at Mile High. Both teams are looking to improve on last year's 3-9 finishes.

The Colorado State Rams will be looking for their second consecutive win over Colorado in Saturday's Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown.

School pride and alumni bragging rights will be on the line at noon Saturday when the Colorado State University Rams host the University of Colorado Buffaloes in the annual Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown at Invesco Field at Mile High. A crowd of more than 55,000 fans is expected for the state’s biggest college sporting event.

117-year-old rivalry

The game renews the longest active rivalry for both schools, with the series dating to 1893 – Colorado State’s inaugural season. Colorado leads the series 59-20-2, but just 5-4 in games played in Denver. The Rams and Buffs have split their last four games, with Colorado State winning 23-17 last year in Boulder.

Pete Thomas will make his collegiate debut as Colorado State’s starting quarterback. Thomas, a highly touted high school standout, is the only true freshman starting quarterback in the country. The youthful Rams could see as many as seven freshmen play Saturday.

The Rams expect significant contributions from junior running back Raymond Carter and senior linebacker Ricky Brewer. Carter had to sit out last year after transferring from UCLA, while Brewer was suspended for the entire 2009 season.

TV, tickets

The game will be televised by The Mtn. (Comcast Ch. 411, DirecTV Ch. 616). Tickets ($55, $65, $90) are available online or by calling (970) 491-7267. Tickets will also be available at the stadium; gates open at 8 a.m.
