Students step out to serve

Posted on April 13, 2009

From social service and medical organizations, to city, county and state agencies; to our neighbors across the street; CSU students want to serve them all.

April is National Volunteer month, and CSUnity, Colorado State’s premier one day service event is about to kick off on April 18th, 2009. CSUnity, in its twelfth year, is a one day event in which CSU students engage the community in service.

2000 students, 200 projects

It began with the idea of getting students out, in and around Fort Collins, to show how much they care about the community that surrounds our beloved institution. It began with 85 students working for a handful of agencies around town. This year, CSUnity will be sending out more than 2000 students to over 200 project sites, and there is room for more projects.

The event is held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the 18th of April. In that time, students complete any manner of service project that is offered to them. They gather at the Lory Student Center at CSU and from there disseminate to their project assignments. Each project is assigned a team of students who come from student organizations, sororities and fraternities, as well as groups of individuals and friends who simply want to do something good. The volunteer event is open to any of CSU’s 25,000 plus student body.

Armed with a sense of purpose and duty

With no more incentive than a desire to help those around us, armed with a sense of purpose and duty, CSUnity participants tackle all sorts of projects. This year CSUnity will be spending time with at risk youth to provide them a positive atmosphere, and making gift baskets for children and Denver’s Children’s hospital. They will be cleaning up city streets, parks and open spaces. Some students will be helping our local CSA’s prepare for the growing season, and still others will be working to promote sustainability around Fort Collins. Spring clean up is also on the docket, for community agencies and neighbors alike.

Watch for the T-shirts across town

Participants in the 2008 CSUnityKeep an eye out on the 18th for students who are participating in CSUnity. You can identify them by their t-shirts. They will be everywhere you look.

If you have a project for the CSUnity students, there is still time to sign up, and plenty of students to help you out. We are looking to help community agencies and neighbors alike. To apply for a project you can either visit our website or call the SLiCE department at CSU at (970) 491-1682 to make inquiries.
