Ask Cam

Low-down on the Ram logo

May 18, 2011

When was the current Ram logo adopted?

Question: Cam I read in Today that they are selling tiles with the Ram logo that are "circa" 1967. I have been on campus many years and remember all the hoopla about the "new: Ram's head logo (some thought it looked like the devil). I know this was no earlier than the mid-eighties. When was the current logo design adopted? I read through Jim Hansen's book and can find no reference.

Cam’s response: The current Ram’s head mark was created through a national design contest in 1992. At the request of the Administration and the Athletics department, and the then-Publications Department (now Communications and Creative Services) convened a committee consisting of professional designers, alumni, faculty, Athletics staff and students including a student athlete. (Check out an old design here.)

The committee solicited submissions through ads in national design publications offering a $2,000 prize to the creator of the winning design. The mark was selected after a painstaking review of the more than 400 submissions we received.  At halftime of a Rams’ home basketball game that fall, the new mark was unveiled and its designer introduced. And we won the game!

Still fanstatic, after all these years,

-- Cam
