Colorado State University on Tuesday, July 13, presented Evangeline Onrubia Aragon Saavedra, niece and goddaughter of Lee Martinez - longtime Fort Collins community member and the namesake of Lee Martinez Park - with a plaque honoring her as an honorary alumna. Her son, Lon, a 1976 graduate of CSU, enjoys supporting the university and has hosted numerous alumni events for Colorado State at his Hakone Foundation in Saratoga, Calif. Evangeline Saavedra’s father, Apolonio Onrubia, graduated from CSU in 1920.

“I thank CSU for the wonderful privilege,” Saavedra said after receiving the plaque from Jan Nerger, interim dean of the College of Natural Sciences.

Large extended family with CSU ties

Witnessing the event on Tuesday were 11 members of Saavedra’s family including her great-cousin, Carol Solano, who works at CSU in the Hartshorn Health Services Medical Clinic.
