Applications available for Kenya Alternative Break

March 1, 2011

SLiCE is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 Alternative Winter Break to Kenya.

A life-changing experience

SLiCE is now accepting applications for the Kenya Alternative Winter Break Trip to take place Dec. 28, 2011 through Jan. 12, 2012.  This is described by students as one of the most powerful and life-changing alternative break trips offered through this program.  The deadline to submit applications is Friday, April 1, 2011, at 5 p.m. in the SLiCE office.

A variety of responsibilities

Students will provide the following service projects:

  • Umoja, a local women's village, is in need of assistance in the nursery school and with coordinating local clubs within the co-op.
  • Gir Gir and Muslim, the two primary schools in the community, are currently under-resourced and need students to help teach and lead field trips to local areas.
  • Save the Elephants, a conservation-based NGO, is in need of wildlife counts to monitor the behaviors of mammals in Samburu National Reserve.
  • Samburu Youth Education Fund, whose main purpose is to improve access to secondary schools, requests that students help with fundraising and bringing students together to monitor their educational progress.

All interested students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, March 24, at 5:30 p.m. in LSC 214 to learn more about this exciting opportunity.
