Phi Gamma Delta, better known as FIJI, is raising money for the American Red Cross by riding a stationary bike for 48 hours. They are looking to best their 1,000 miles and double their $2,500 of proceeds from last year.
Before receiving their new charter in 2008, the old fraternity Phi Gamma Delta would ride around CSU and the Fort Collins area to raise money for the American Red Cross. For the past couple years, however, Phi Gamma Delta, better known as FIJI, brought their annual philanthropy fundraiser on campus to get more CSU student involvement.
"We made it stationary for more CSU and community involvement," says FIJI President Josh Cleland. "This increases the exposure of our event in hopes of increasing donations to the American Red Cross."
The brothers aren't just riding for fun. Part of the fraternity is philanthropy, or the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations. Gamma Phi Delta nationally supports the American Red Cross and is riding to raise funds for them.
"We wanted to donate to the Red Cross because of all they do to benefit America," says Cleland.
Recycled Cycles donated the stationary bike FIJI is using for the event. FIJI also encourages non-Greek involvement as well.
"We want to give positive Greek life exposure," says Graduate Advisor Robert Unfug. "We support all Greek life but we want all students to be involved with our activities because they are a huge part of what we do and the funds we raise."
"(FIJI) is the only fraternity that does fundraising on campus like this while still increasing involvement," says Cleland.
All of the different sororities on campus are encouraged to help raise money as well. The sororities include:
The sorority who donates the most will win a social event with the brothers of FIJI.
This event is one of many FIJI looks to hold this year. In the Spring of 2010, FIJI will host its 'FIJI Islander Week', a week-long activity with games among the different sororities and fraternities. The two winning sororities and winning fraternity will receive a quad social with FIJI. Every year is different to increase involvement, so be sure to be on the look-out for this event.
This event goes from 12 p.m. Nov. 4 to 12 p.m. on Nov 6. There is still time to donate! Tour De FIJI is located at the corner of Plum and Loomis streets. Go and give your support!
