Everyday Heroes - Bill Henry & Randy VanGalder

January 18, 2012

Bill Henry and Randy VanGalder were nominated for going above and beyond the call of duty during a major snow storm - and because of their willingness to help out in any kind of situation.

Bill and Randy, heavy equipment operators at Facilities Management for 37 years and 22 years, respectively, were nominated by Sheela Backen in Facilities for an Everyday Hero Award.

These two Everyday Heroes are willing to help out in any kind of situation. Sheela describes one such event: “The day after our heavy snow storm on Oct. 27, the trash truck sunk about a foot into a trench that was dug in front of one of the dumpsters on Foothills Campus. Several people tried to pull the truck out of the trench with their equipment with no luck.

“I called the Heavy Equipment Shop and asked for help. The crew had come in very early in the morning to clear snow off streets and parking lots across campus. They were on break when I called and asked for help in getting the trash truck out of the trench. Bill Henry and Randy VanGalder brought their heavy loader from main campus out to the Foothills Campus and pulled the trash truck out of the trench.”

When asked about the award, Bill said he was surprised to receive it because anytime someone needs help or there is an emergency, they'll respond. He felt it was an everyday action for them.

Sheela adds, “Their willingness to help saved the day for the Integrated Solid Waste section. No tow trucks were available and we would have been stuck there most of the day. I really appreciate the willingness of other groups to lend a hand when we need them the most.”

When Bill isn't working, he enjoys both water and snow skiing. Randy likes to camp and fish. When asked what Randy wanted fellow employees to know about himself, he says that he’s an easy-going guy.

Randy has a new granddaughter that he and his wife plan on spending time enjoying.
