Safety Tips Regarding Police Impersonators

January 11, 2011

Fort Collins police recently received a report of a man impersonating a police officer in the community. Colorado State University Police are offering information to the campus community about what to do if they are concerned they are being contacted by a police impersonator.

Recently, Fort Collins Police Services learned of a man impersonating a police officer in the community. The department is asking for help in identifying the impersonator, who was reported to have made a traffic stop while dressed as a police officer and driving a vehicle that resembled a police vehicle: white, with police decals and emergency lighting.

This incident was reported to have occurred near Zeigler Road and Paddington Road in Fort Collins on January 7 at about 3:20 p.m. More information about this incident is available from the city at http://www.fcgov.com/news/index.php?id=3568.

What to do if you believe you are being contacted by a police impersonator

If you believe you are being pulled over by a person who may be impersonating a police officer, be cautious, and remember the safety tips below from Colorado State University Police Department:

- Put on your flashers, drive the speed limit and call 911 from your cell phone. Tell the 911 dispatcher that you are concerned. If you do not have a cell phone, drive to a well lit, busy area, such as the parking lot of a busy store.
- Do not stop your vehicle or get out of your vehicle until a dispatcher can confirm you are being pulled over by a legitimate police officer.
-If the dispatcher cannot confirm that you are being pulled over by a police officer, stay on the line with the dispatcher. Drive carefully to a safe place, such as a local police department.
-If you are issued documents that may be suspicious, contact the issuing agency about their legitimacy.
- Report anything suspicious.

Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to contact Officer Jeff Bruce with Fort Collins Police Services at 970-221-6540.
