Working at CSU

Managing and developing student and seasonal employees

August 10, 2010

Supervisors often feel divided between their responsibility to coach and mentor student and seasonal employees and their need to accomplish -- in a timely manner -- immediate goals. This class offered by Training and Organizational Development will give you techniques and tools for effective management and development of these employees.

The balancing act

On Thursday, Aug. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon in Room 129, Johnson Hall, CSU's Training and Organizational Development will present a class titled, "The Balancing Act: Supervising Student and Seasonal Employees."

Make the best use of your time

Supervising student and seasonal employees requires supervisors to be able to effectively balance between coaching, teaching, and mentoring versus their professional needs for accomplishment and efficient use of time.

This session will cover concepts, techniques, and tools designed to assist supervisors with effective management and development of their student and seasonal employees.

Topics

  • Recognizing and managing generational differences
  • Position descriptions, interviewing and hiring the best candidate
  • Preparing for the first day, setting expectations
  • Motivation, development, retention, and evaluation
  • Conflict resolution

This class is free, and pre-registration is required. To register, please visit www.training.colostate.edu/register.html and select the “Register for Workshops” link near the top of the page.

Our instructor is Personnel Development Coordinator Ann Randall, Colorado State Forest Service.
