'Pets Forever' named finalist in national contest

December 7, 2010

A University sponsored program that helps the elderly keep their pets for as long as possible is a finalist in Heska Corporation's 'Inspiration In Action' contest.

Pets ForeverPets Forever connects CSU students and community volunteers with elderly people in the community to help them care for their pets. Volunteers help walk dogs, feed pets, transport pets to veterinary appointments and other tasks that enable elderly to keep their pets longer.

Vote now through Dec. 15

The winner will be selected by public vote at www.heska.com/action. Voting ends Dec. 15.

If Pets Forever wins the $25,000 prize, the proceeds will be used to help more elderly people in the Larimer County community keep their pets and to extend their current pet care beyond wellness exams and vaccinations to helping owners care for pets that are sick or injured.

Pets provide companionship and health benefits

Research shows that elderly people with pets benefit with fewer doctor visits, decreased depression and cholesterol levels, increased activity levels, independence and confidence. Pets also provide companionship that keeps their elderly owners on a daily routine, and elderly pet owners have been found in studies to be calmer during a crisis.

“The bond between pet owners and their animals can be very powerful,” said Lori Kogan, founder and director of Pets Forever. “Voting for us will help us continue supporting pet owners who particularly benefit from the human-animal bond.”

Individuals may vote only once. Heska will award $5,000 to the second-place winner. For more details on the finalists and to vote, visit www.heska.com/action.
