Freshman named a conference Player of the Week

True freshman punter Pete Kontodiakos received Mountain West Conference honors as Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.

A 6-foot-3, 185-pound freshman from Tarpon Springs, Fla., Kontodiakos played a significant role in the Rams’ 35-20 win over high-powered Nevada Saturday.

Kontodiakos (cunn-DOH-DEE-aack-iss) boomed a 67-yard punt in the first quarter, just prior to DeAngelo Wilkinson’s fumble recovery that set up John Mosure’s touchdown. The punt was the longest by a CSU player since Jeff Babcock hit an 89-yarder, the school record, vs. New Mexico, Oct. 30, 2004.

Record-breaking punt was only the beginning

His 76-yard encore in the second quarter was the sixth-longest punt in CSU history. At day’s end, the CSU punter had averaged 47.2 yards on six punts, with two inside the 20. But take away his 20-yard punt late in the first half, unsuccessfully trying to corner the Wolf Pack in its own territory, and the true freshman averaged 52.6 yards on five of his attempts.

Kontodiakos enters the week ranked 13th in the nation with a 44.3-yard gross punting average.

A top performer

He is CSU’s second true freshman to win the award in little more than a year, after Kicker Ben DeLine earned the honors with a walk-off game-winning field goal, Sept. 6, 2008. Kontodiakos graduated from Countryside High School in Tarpon Springs, Florida and was ranked the nation's No. 1 high school punter by College Football Hall of Fame punter Ray Guy. His father, John, kicked for the University of Miami from 1979-1982.

Kontodiakos and the Rams are in Provo, Utah this Saturday taking on the BYU Cougars at Edwards Stadium.
