First football scrimmage set for Friday

April 3, 2012

CSU fans will get their first extended look at the 2012 football team Friday when the Rams hold their initial scrimmage of the spring.

CSU coach Jim McElwain is looking forward to seeing his team scrimmage Friday. The scrimmage, set for 3:45 p.m. at Hughes Stadium, is open to the public. Previous spring practices under new coach Jim McElwain have been closed to the public and media.

McElwain, who helped Alabama win two of the past three national championships as offensive coordinator, has watched his team make steady progress during spring drills despite learning new offensive and defensive systems. He’s eager to see how the Rams perform in game-like conditions for the first time.

“I think (it’s time) for them and for us (coaches) to see who goes out and performs up to their abilities,” he said. “Like we always talk about every practice, every situation, be proud of what you put on film so that when you watch yourself the next day, be proud of what you did and your effort. Let’s correct the mistakes but whatever you do, be proud of what you put up there on film.”

New schemes, veteran team

While McElwain and his staff have yet to unveil a depth chart, the Rams have plenty of experience with 15 starters returning from last year’s 3-9 team. Included is a strong group of running backs and a defense led by all-Mountain West defensive end Nordly Capi and three starting linebackers.

First of four public practices

Friday’s workout is the first of four spring practices open to the public. The Friday, April 13, workout under the lights will be a milestone for the program: It will be held at Infinity Park in Glendale, marking the first time CSU has held a spring practice in the Denver-metro area.

The next public scrimmage will be Sunday, April 15, at Hughes Stadium, with the annual spring game set for April 21 at Hughes.
