In Memory

Elizabeth "Liz" Wynne Cross

February 20, 2012

Elizabeth "Liz" Wynne Cross passed away on Feb. 13 at Golden Peaks Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 85.

She was born on June 10, 1926, in San Bernardino, Calif., to Rev. Edwin "Ted" E. Hale and Eva Miller Hale. Liz was preceded in death by her parents and her older sisters, Mary Ruth McClary and Evangeline Vickers.

From an early age, Liz showed an aptitude for music, playing piano throughout her life. As a teenager she had a poem published in a book of religious poetry. Liz's love of writing led her to major in English at Bethany Nazarene College in Oklahoma, where she earned her B.A. in 1949, graduating magna cum laude.

On January 1, 1948, Liz was married to Henry "Hank" A. Cross, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Vangie and Caswell Vickers in a ceremony performed by her father. They moved to Fort Collins in 1969 when Hank took a position as professor of experimental psychology at Colorado State University. Liz held a variety of jobs working as a teacher, secretary and library assistant. She worked at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins from 1972-1979 and for the Fort Collins Board of Realtors from 1981-1983. Art, music, church, reading, and politics counted highly in Liz's life. Liz and Hank attended Fort Collins Symphony concerts and were members of the First United Methodist Church for nearly four decades.

Liz died of complications from Alzheimer's Disease. Liz's family thanks the caring staff at Golden Peaks Care and Rehab for helping Liz in the last years of her life. Liz is survived by her husband of 64 years, Henry, of Fort Collins; daughter, Connie Fields and her husband, Derryl, of Berthoud; daughter, Terri Harlow, of Firestone and her fiancé, David Wood, of Lakewood; and son, Thomas, of Westminster.

A private family memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church or Fort Collins Symphony in care of Resthaven Funeral Home.
