May 17, 2013

Honorees were selected from nominations by class members who are seniors in the Communication Studies Department.

The Department of Communication Studies Capstone class honored four faculty and staff members Tuesday evening, May 7, in a ceremony of gratitude. Honorees were selected from nominations by Capstone class members, who are seniors in the Department.

The Communication Studies Capstone Appreciation Award was designed to recognize a member of the Colorado State University community who has made a significant contribution to improving the academic life of a graduating senior in Communication Studies. Recipients are individuals who, through skilled communication and commitment, bring out the best in our graduating seniors and strengthen the CSU community.

This semester's recipients

Hye Seung ChungThis semester’s recipients are Hye Seung Chung, Department of Communication Studies; James Lindsay, Department of History; Sue Pendell, chair of the Deparmtent of Communication Studies; and Shaun Beaty, associate director of The Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT).

Nominated by Jennifer Sheldon, Chung was recognized for her commitment to teaching and mentoring as well as her ongoing commitment to learning through academic conversation.

“Her passion about her subject, especially media studies and critical thinking, have enlightened my own ways of thinking about the media, and expanded my ability to judge and evaluate the messages I am receiving," Jennifer said.

Lindsay was nominated by Carl Claassen for his invitational approach to teaching that is only complimented by his commitment to the highest of academic standards and rigor.

“I will remember Dr. Lindsay because he made me try harder, offered mentorship, pushed my research skills, and in turn, made me a better student, and a much better historian,” Carl said.

Sue PendellPendell was nominated by Burton Crosby for her support in moving Burton toward an educational plan that best reflected his interests with a good measure of humor, wisdom, and guidance.

“Dr. Sue Pendell is Chair of the Department, travels the world, and somehow still found time to help me with my academics and make me feel a part of the CSU community,” Burton said.

Shaun BeatyBeaty was nominated by Jessica Cox, Capstone GTA, for his strong dedication to assisting Capstone students with the construction of their ePortfolios and the technical problems that surfaced along the way. Jessica noted that Beaty filled her last two semesters as GTA with ease because of his “efficiency” and “commitment” in responding to our students.

Essentials of academic support

Eric Aoki, Capstone instructor, said that “these nominations illustrate a clear recognition of how essential academic support and assistance is for the success and well-being of our students.” He added, “Communicating gratitude to those who help us out along the way is an essential practice for special and fun occasions like this wonderful evening but equally important for the everyday moments of relating.”
