Express and Priority mail rates increase Jan. 4

November 9, 2009

First-class postage remains at 44 cents for calendar year 2010. Express and Priority mail rates increase Jan. 4, 2010.

Forego traditional spring rate increase in 2010

The U.S. Postal Service has announced it will forego their traditional annual rate increase this spring. First-Class Mail, Standard Mail and Parcel Post will remain at current rates through calendar year 2010. Despite revenue losses, the U.S. Postal Service feels that increasing rates in these mail categories could lead to further reductions in mail volumes, with long-term negative effects.

Rate adjustments Jan. 4

Although postage for First-Class Mail will not increase, rates for Priority and Express mail pieces will be adjusted effective Jan. 4, 2010. On average, Priority Mail prices will increase 3.3 percent while Express Mail prices increase 4.5 percent. For mailers sending domestic items in Priority Mail Flat-rate envelopes, postage will decrease by 5 cents to $4.90. Domestic Express Mail Flat-rate items will increase to $18.30.
